Why did you choose to volunteer at Bread for Life?
I had volunteered at BFL many years ago when I was working evenings, and I had no idea beforehand that there was such a need for it in our community. I was not able to volunteer again until I retired and was free during daytime hours. I couldn’t wait to get back to it.
What has been the best part of your volunteer experience?
The best part has been getting to know the clients who come in, the staff members, and the other volunteers. In the 15 months I’ve been there, they’ve come to feel like family, and I look forward to seeing them every single time that I’m there. Also, I’m in awe of the generosity and support from the community, and the local stores and businesses who donate so much.
What is your favorite memory from volunteering at Bread for Life?
Seeing the community garden and the beehives this past summer was very impressive to me.
How has volunteering impacted your life?
It’s made me more sensitive to the fact that most of us are so fortunate in what we have, and that not everyone has had the same breaks and opportunities in life. When I see the sincerity and dedication of the staff and the other volunteers, it’s truly inspiring to me, and makes me wish I could do more. I admire their kindness and compassion.
What would you say to someone who is thinking about volunteering?
Just do it – you won’t be sorry!
